Intel has recently announced its latest laptop CPUs, the Intel Core Ultra, also known as Meteor Lake. These new chips are expected to be some of the most powerful processors available for laptops, thanks to their innovative chiplet design and focus on artificial intelligence (AI). However, there’s a catch - they might come with a hefty price tag.

Expensive Price Point

According to a report from Money UDN, the starting price for the first Intel Core Ultra laptops is rumored to be above $1,500. This high price point might discourage many users from upgrading, as more affordable options, such as AMD laptops, are available in the market.

AI-Focused Design

It appears that Intel is not targeting the mainstream segment with the Core Ultra. The company’s entire Intel Innovation event was centered around AI, suggesting that these laptops are primarily designed for users who require advanced AI capabilities. For the average user, the AI features might not be of much use at the moment.

Chiplet Design and Architecture Changes

Meteor Lake not only introduces new processors but also brings significant changes to the architecture. The chips will utilize a chiplet design, leveraging Foveros 3D packaging technology. The hybrid core architecture, seen in the previous generations, will remain, but with the addition of Redwood Cove performance (P) cores and Crestmont efficiency (E) cores.

Enhanced Graphics and AI Capabilities

In addition to the CPU and GPU, the Intel Core Ultra will feature a neural processing unit (NPU). This NPU will handle AI workloads, which were highlighted during Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger’s keynote at the Intel Innovation event. Intel claims that this architectural change marks the biggest shift the company has experienced in 40 years.

Performance Boost and Power Efficiency

While AI is a key focus for Intel, the company promises improved performance and power efficiency across all types of workloads. This means that even users without a specific interest in AI can benefit from these laptops. However, the inclusion of AI capabilities will likely contribute to the higher price of the Core Ultra laptops.

Conclusion

Intel’s new laptop CPUs, the Intel Core Ultra (Meteor Lake), offer advanced AI capabilities and a chiplet design. While they come with a higher price tag, they promise improved performance and power efficiency for all types of workloads. However, it remains to be seen whether these features will be worth the investment for the average user. The laptops are expected to be available in mid-December and early 2024.
